The Sustainability Of Coffee And Chocolate - 1419 Words

In class we had many discussions on the sustainability of coffee and chocolate. There are ways in which both coffee and chocolate are sustainable, but for the most part I have found them to be very unsustainable. These commodities relate to environmental, economic, and social sustainability in both positive and negative ways. I will go through the different form of sustainability and explain the reason why coffee and chocolate are, or are not sustainable. First we can look at the social sustainability and economic sustainability of coffee. Chocolate is often a gift given to one another on many occasions such as holiday’s or events. It is an excellent thank you gift, as people are pleased when they receive a box of chocolates and they are often an affordable gift (depending on brand). Chocolate is also used for hot chocolates, and cookies that bring people together in holiday seasons especially. It is used to make a social gesture or give you pleasure while consuming it, all wh ile for the most part being cost efficient. Although there are many positives to the social and economic sustainability of chocolate for consumers, those who harvest these commodities may not say so. As we saw in â€Å"Chocolate The Bitter Truth†, there are huge amounts of child labour used in the harvest of coca plants. These children are most often taken away from their parents in poor cities, and are forced to work for a man they are sold to.
